THE SEED LIBRARY

The Quogue Library collection has grown beyond its roots of just books. The Seed Library extends our dedication to our local ecosystem, stemming from our carefully tended gardens and produce. Our seed library mission is to provide sustainable gardening with healthy seeds & assistive gardening resources. Anyone with a Quogue library card can take home 2 packets of seeds per visit, with a limit of 4 packets of seeds per month. We'd love to receive photos of your garden at info@quoguelibrary.org or tag us on social media. We invite you to stay engaged with the harvest and pollination of our outdoor gardens and to participate in our engaging and informative gardening tours and programs.

HOW TO BORROW SEEDS:
Once you have selected a seed card from our seed library catalog, our staff at the Service Desk will check the seeds out for you. We encourage the saving and sharing of mature seeds and welcome labeled seed donations for our collection. We offer diverse native seed varieties and encourage patrons to practice responsible gardening. We kindly ask patrons to take only what they can grow in their own space.

General Gardening Tips:

Soil:
-
add compost or manure to the soil
-
Mix in a balanced, organic compost when first planting
Planting:
-
Note the depth and inches apart crops need when sowing seeds
Watering:
-
Water plants moderately, about 1 inch per week
-
Water early in the day to minimize disease problems
Harvesting
-
Gather greens and roots throughout summer as needed
-
Roots are best eaten at 3-4 inches but remain in good condition until quite large
Weeding
